In general life cover is just that – an insurance policy designed to pay out a lump sum amount on death within a specified term – for example £ 100,000 with a 25 year term.
Life policies can also include critical illness cover – again designed to pay out a lump sum in the event of suffering a specified critical illness such as cancer, heart attack, stroke etc, including critical illness on a policy normally adds greatly to the monthly premium.
However, a leading life cover provider has added an option onto their policy allowing you access to medical experts around the world, with an expert second opinion and overseas treatment – all for an additional £4 per month on top of your normal life policy premium.
What’s covered ?
The policy covers you (the policy holder) and your eligible children (up to age 18 or 21 if in full time education) if diagnosed with a serious illness where the following treatment is required –
- Cancer treatment
- Coronary artery bypass surgery
- Heart value replacement or repair
- Neurosurgery ( for conditions like benign brain or spinal tumours )
- Live-donor organ transplants
- Bone marrow transplant
Travel & Accommodation
The cover also pays travel and 3-4 star accommodation costs for the policy holder and a companion and covers the expenses for both parents (or a parent and companion) if it is your child who is ill.
Cash Allowance
The policy pays upfront cash allowances of £100 per day of hospitalisation overseas for up to 60 days.
Medication
The policy also covers ongoing medication costs up to £50,000 on return to the UK for approved medications that are not funded, or partially funded by the NHS.
How much is covered by my additional £4 per month premium
The maximum benefit is £1 million in any one policy year. You can be treated multiple times up to a maximum of £ 2 million over the policy term.
How it works
On diagnosis you will have access to an expert second medical opinion.
The expert will examine your case and provide recommendation on treatment options including specialist centres overseas which could provide you with the best possible treatment.
From the options you are free to choose your preferred course of treatment and the specialist location you feel best meets your needs.
All the hospital admission, travel and accommodation is arranged for you and a companion
You are then treated at your chosen recommended hospital
Once you return home you will receive post treatment support and advice
As stated the above policy option is an additional £ 4 per month to your normal policy premiums – therefore for example if your policy cost £ 20 per month the additional cover would add a further £ 4 to the policy making a total premium of £ 24 per month.
